International Women's Day with World Square

Celebrate International Women's Day With Us

Everyone knows someone like her. Maybe she’s your soulmate. Or she raised you. She helped you get that promotion. She got you through a bad breakup. She marched with you. She pushed you to chase your dreams. Maybe you’re 'her' to someone else.

Let us celebrate you and all the wonderful women in our lives this International Women’s Day.

What is International Women's Day all about?

For over a hundred years, International Women’s Day (IWD) has raised awareness around women's issues and promoted change. You could say it first started in New York City in 1908 when women marched for better working conditions, fair pay, and the right to vote. IWD’s official colours were taken from the flag of the Women's Social and Political Union of the UK (purple for justice and dignity, green for hope, and white for purity and womanhood), and they were active then too, but maybe these are a retroactive homage.

Instead, you could say the first official IWD was held in 1911, after the International Conference of Working Women - 100 women from 17 countries, representing unions, socialist parties, and working women's clubs - sat together and agreed that it should be the 19th of March.

Apparently, Russia didn’t get the memo since they celebrated their first IWD two years later on February 22nd, and a year after that Germany held it on March 8th.

March 8th stuck, and every International Women’s Day has been celebrated since then.

International Women’s Day has survived, and even thrived, because women and those who believed in them knew its importance. What it represents - equal pay, ending gender discrimination, establishing reproductive rights, preventing violence against women - was worth protecting, and passing on these values was, and still is, a noble challenge.

Sticking to just one day to celebrate women didn’t seem right, so at World Square we will be hosting a month-long celebration of women in partnership with SheSaw and BackStage Music, who are bringing their curated event series - ‘Now You See Her’ and ‘Now You Hear Her’ to one of World Square’s pop-up spaces located on the corner of George and Goulburn. On top of our celebrations we also have a wide range of special offers from our wonderful stores for every type of woman.
