Surviving the Last Stretch of Lockdown!

Hang in there Sydney! In our last leg of the 4 x 100m sprint, here are some activities and ideas to help you push through the final stretch of lockdown.

We’ve had it tough in Sydney, but we are on the home stretch! Stick with us and together we can make the most of this sprint towards the finish line.

October is Mental Health Month, giving us an important reminder to check in with ourselves, our feelings, and do the same for others. The pandemic has put everyone's mental health to the test, and with it continuing to drag on, it's getting harder to stay motivated.

So, in our last leg of the 4 x 100m sprint, here are some activities and ideas to help you push through the final stretch of lockdown.

Fitspo.

Get moving! This can be in front of the TV or dancing in the kitchen - no judgement here!

Exercise activates all those feel-good chemicals in the brain that improve mood and make us feel happier.

Setting goals for exercise is a great way to stay motivated and gives that sense of accomplishment that we all need. Check out the Darling Harbour Walk to stay within 5km, and for a range of sights to see. That will be sure to tempt you out into the fresh air and warm sunshine!

Unleash your inner-creativity.

Exercising our brains is as important as exercising our bodies. Why not use this time to find a new activity that you love? Are there books you've always wanted to read, or have you dreamed of writing your own? Painting, crafts, knitting, cross-stitch, baking, gardening - the possibilities are endless.

Doing something we enjoy makes us feel good and also contributes to a sense of accomplishment, leaving us feeling gratified and satisfied. We recommend bringing your inner artist to life with a Paint By Numbers kit. Not only is it an enjoyable pass-time, but you’re left with something you can display forever!

Don’t socially distance yourself from the fun!

Thanks to technology, staying social is relatively easy - despite the fact that we are all over zoom!

To stay connected with friends and family, take your activities and coffee dates to a picnic (once fully vaccinated). If general conversation isn’t enough to entertain (let’s be honest, we don't have much to talk about) there are heaps of games out there just waiting to be played.

Check out influencer @Flex.mami’s Flex Factory, where you can get your hands on the card games she has created with conversation starters like no other. From questions you want to answer to never have I ever, this is sure to teach you a thing or two about your loved ones!

HINT: Play these games with your family on weeknights at home to dial up the fun, or don’t forget the family favourites of Scrabble or Monopoly!

There are also dozens of online classes available on the City Of Sydney Website if you’re up for challenging yourself with a new skill. Chefs are offering virtual cooking classes, and wine connoisseurs are offering virtual wine tastings.

What are you waiting for?! Call up your friend, cousin, aunty - anyone! Human interaction goes a long way towards our wellbeing.

Allow yourself to feel.

Remember, it’s okay to reach out for help when you need to. If we stick together, we can make it through this last stage of lockdown and come out the other side ready and motivated to jump back into normal life.

If you are in need of support, Beyond Blue and Lifeline are some of the many organisations out there for you.
