International Women’s Day

Power to Women! If you’re looking for ways you can make a contribution, little or large, every effort gets us one step closer.

International Women's Day is one of our favourite days of the year!  It's a chance to celebrate all the wonderful women of the world, in our lives and all of their amazing achievements.

What is International Women's Day?

From humble beginnings, International Women's Day, celebrated globally on the 8th of March, was first formally marked in March 1911 by Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland as a commemoration of the women's suffrage movement. In the years since, International Women's Day has spread globally recognising and celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women.

Why is International Women's Day important?

International Women's Day not only celebrates the progress women have made but also marks a call to action for accelerating women's equality. This year the focus is on raising awareness against gender bias and collectively joining forces to #breakthebias. There’s still a lot of work to be done in the quest for gender equality but as a collective, what we do in our day-to-day can truly make a difference.

How you can help?

Power to Women! If you’re looking for ways you can make a contribution, little or large, every effort gets us one step closer. From taking part in an International Women's Day parade, to showing your support on social or making a contribution to a female-focused charity, there are many ways you can be involved in driving women's equality.

To celebrate IWD 2022, we're shining a light on the stores at World Square that are committed to driving change for women not just on this celebrated day, but year-round.

Pandora is known for its personal charms and affordable designs but something not many people know is that they also have a strong focus on gender equality. Their UNICEF partnership funds programmes aimed at supporting the education and empowerment of young girls around the world.

L'Occitane. L’Occitane and its Foundation support actions in Burkina Faso that promote the socio-economic development of girls and women. In 2020, they have exceeded their goal of supporting 33,000 women in Burkina Faso, having supported more than 42,000 women since the brand's commitment began.

Grill'd is known for the burgers we love to eat and every burger you buy, you get a token that can be donated to your choice of 1 of 3 charities. The 'Local Matters' initiative was started by Grill’d to raise money for local charities for each of their stores. So far, they've raised over $6 million for local communities that needed it most including women's charities such as Diamond Women - a support service for women facing an unplanned pregnancy.

This International Women's Day, visit World Square and do your part in improving the prospects of women all around the world.
